Benefits of the Pipeline

Overview

As a source of lower-cost sustainable fuel for power generation and direct use for industrial and commercial customers, the pipeline fosters an enabling environment for economic development and job creation in the sub-region. Natural gas is considered the cleanest of all fossil fuels
There are numerous benefits to the countries in the region from this project.  These include:

  • A source of  cost-effective, secure, clean and reliable energy for West Africa
  • Provides a foundation to facilitate regional economic growth and development.
  • Proves that economic integration can work for all
  • Provides an infrastructure to stimulate further foreign investment
  • Displaces liquid fuels in power generation and consequently contributes to reduction of emission of green house gases in the region
Conserving The Environment
Natural gas is the cleanest of all fossil fuels. The natural gas transmission system will result in a switch from crude oil to clean-burning natural gas for power generation and industry in Ghana, Togo and Benin. This will improve the environment for people in the region through measurable long-term reductions in air pollutants.Over a 20-year period, it is expected that gas emissions in the region can be reduced by as much as 100 million tonnes.
Regional Integration
The WAPCo pipeline is more than a catalyst for clean economic growth and environmental benefits. It is a cornerstone of regional integration. It is also unique in being the first natural gas transmission system to cross international borders in West Africa. It is also an outstanding example of cooperation and partnership between the governments of Togo, Benin, Nigeria and Ghana, under the auspices of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), to achieve their goals for long-term energy security. The trans-national character of the WAPCo transmission system will reflect ECOWAS' objective of sharing resources for socio-economic development.Under a Treaty signed by the Heads of States of the four countries, WAPCo has led to the establishment of a single regional entity with administrative authority, controlled by the States, to regulate pipeline construction and operations.
Economic Development
The WAPCo Pipeline serves as a pioneering model of a multi-country private/public sector partnership for sub-regional economic growth. The Pipeline shows that through creative cooperation among States in the ECOWAS Region in providing a predictable and stable business environment, significant private direct investment can be attracted into the sub-region.Over its life, the Pipeline will provide a long-term supply of energy to stimulate private investment into the sub-region. This investment is expected to create jobs and wealth in the sub-region.Consumers of electricity also stand to benefit from reduced costs through use of the comparatively cheaper natural gas for power generation.Given projected regional demand for low-cost sustainable energy, and Nigeria's considerable natural gas reserves, the pipeline's extension to other sub-regional markets appear likely in future. This will bring additional economic benefits that are yet to be estimated.
